What a busy year we had in 5th grade! Can you believe the year is over? 5th grade went to Hale Farm after we returned from Easter Break…we saw an example of glassblowing, the school house, the church, experienced butter making and so much more. It was a great field trip!
For math our focus has been on decimals and place value. We focused on reading, writing, and understanding decimals to the thousandths place. We discussed strategies for adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals as well as rounding decimals to the nearest whole number, tenths, and hundredths place. We also focused on conversions within the metric system and with liquid measurements…we even looked at larger conversions within computer systems. We wrapped up the year reviewing fractions, decimals, and multiplication strategies. Practicing math facts over the summer will help ensure we are ready for next year.
In science, we spent much of the quarter learning about types of energy. We discuss forms of energy such as light, heat, sound, and electricity. We looked at forms of energy that we use regularly and how we can “see” energy…sound energy and light energy in particular. 5th grade spent the last part of the quarter beginning to explore objects that we find in space.
Upon hearing about the passing of Pope Francis, we spent time after Easter learning about the period of mourning and other processes that lead up to conclave. We were able to watch the announcement of the new pope, Pope Leo after he was elected. It will be interesting to watch how the world grows and changes under the leadership of Pope Leo.
As we sit here and write this article, we cannot help but think how quickly the school year flew by! We enjoyed doing several research projects. It was interesting learning about our Famous African Americans and Famous Women who have made their mark in history. We enjoyed writing creative stories when we were given some props. Some of us were able to write sequels to our stories. We have some future authors in our class. We continue to review the different parts of speech. We practice identifying them in sentences and also using them in our writing. We have learned a lot this year and definitely look forward to what sixth grade has to offer.
During Enrichment this quarter, we have continued to read articles on Achieve3000, watching the Newsdepth program that Ideastream/PBS broadcast each week, and we began creating a Career Portfolio that we will add to each year.
